Village Life
Post midnight, the dog which had accompanied us from Hanuman Chatti began to bark continuously. We could barely sleep after that. Amit told us later that he was barking at the foxes roaming around the area.
We woke up at around 4AM. Needless to say that it was terribly cold outside. I had kept everything ready the previous night so, I went directly to the kitchen. Hot black tea and Dalia were served. I could not eat much that early.
We began our ascent at around 4:30AM. The entire stretch is steep and in the dark it was difficult to spot the trail. Moreover, I had too many layers of clothes on me to beat the cold. It was a bit tiring even without the huge backpack.
Bhavya had a bad stomach and he found it very difficult to climb. Finally he had to puke and feel relieved.
Raman asked me if he could record some audio for my YouTube video. Though I do not record voice in my videos, I agreed. He spoke very well and that made me keep the clip in my final edit.
After crossing several false peaks along the way, we finally reached the summit at around 6:30AM. It was cloudy and we missed the sunrise. It was windy and therefore very cold too. However, we did see some spectacular views. We spent some time at the summit before heading back as it began to snow lightly.
I walked slowly as I absorbed the views for one last time before heading back to town.
We freshened up, packed our bags and had Rajma-rice for lunch. It was a very early meal at 10:30AM. Raman left to Hanuman Chatti directly after the meal. He wanted to reach home that same night. After some time, we too headed back to Kandola Channi. It was an easy walk.
Back at the guest house, we finished the final episode of Family man season 3. At around 4PM, Govind bhai, our cook, made some absolutely delicious bread pakoda. Though fried, I could not resist eating two pieces. I think staying in this village house at Kandola Channi has been the best part of this trek.
In the evening, campfire was setup in front of the house as we watched a beautiful sunset from the veranda.
We sat in the kitchen and had dinner on our last night on this trek. Govind bhai had prepared - Roti-Cabbage sabji, Rice-Dal and a sweet made of Ramdana - a local grain. It is also called Amarnath and is considered a super grain for its rich nutrient content. We chatted with Amit and Govind bhai a bit before heading back to our room.
I was glad to be back to the comforts of a soft bed and thick razzais. I slept well that night.
